Who Is Neek Lurk? The ASSC Founder Explained
Neek Lurk is the alias of Andrew Buenaflor — the founder of Anti Social Social Club. He built one of the most culturally significant streetwear brands of the 2010s from a deeply personal starting point. Furthermore, his authenticity was the brand’s most powerful differentiator. He did not present a carefully managed brand persona. He shared his actual emotional state. Additionally, this honesty — rare in fashion — is the reason ASSC built a fanbase that identified with the brand rather than just buying it. As a result, Neek Lurk is one of the most important figures in streetwear’s emotional evolution.
Early Life — Las Vegas and NikeTalk
Neek Lurk was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. He spent his formative years on the internet. Specifically on NikeTalk — the sneaker and streetwear forum that was the cultural center of streetwear community before Instagram existed. Furthermore, Neek built a reputation on NikeTalk through WDYWT (What Did You Wear Today) posts. He was documenting his outfits and building an audience around his aesthetic sensibility years before he launched a brand. Additionally, this early internet community experience shaped his understanding of how streetwear identity forms and spreads online. As a result, when Neek launched ASSC, he already knew how to build a community without traditional marketing.
The Stüssy Years
Before ASSC, Neek Lurk worked as social media and brand marketing director at Stüssy. This was significant experience. Stüssy is one of the founding brands of global streetwear culture — started in the early 1980s by Shawn Stussy and arguably the most influential brand in the formation of streetwear as a category. Furthermore, working at Stüssy gave Neek a deep understanding of how streetwear brand identity is built, maintained and communicated. Additionally, it gave him contacts in the LA creative community that would prove essential when ASSC launched. As a result, ASSC was not Neek’s first exposure to the streetwear industry — it was his application of everything he had learned there.
Mental Health as Creative Material
Neek Lurk has spoken openly about using his mental health experience as creative fuel. His manic and depressive states inform the brand’s aesthetic and messaging directly. Furthermore, the brand’s slogans — Self Doubt, I Miss You, Mind Games, Get Weird — are not marketing concepts. They are emotional reports. Additionally, this directness resonated powerfully with a generation that was increasingly public about mental health but had few fashion brands that reflected that experience. As a result, ASSC buyers did not just like the brand. They felt understood by it.
The Controversy
Neek Lurk’s public persona generated controversy alongside the brand’s success. Shipping delays became a significant issue as ASSC scaled — orders were taking months to arrive. Furthermore, some buyers never received their orders at all. The brand’s subreddit created the hashtag #wheresmyhoodiebro which went viral. Additionally, Neek’s Instagram presence was erratic and occasionally combative. He posted a t-shirt reading “Eye Hate Neek” in response to criticism — a move that alienated rather than endeared fans. As a result, the period between 2017 and 2021 was ASSC’s most operationally troubled era, with quality and delivery issues overshadowing the brand’s genuine cultural appeal.
The Marquee Brands Era
The 2022 acquisition by Marquee Brands changed the operational picture. Neek Lurk’s direct involvement in the brand’s day-to-day operations changed with the acquisition. Furthermore, Marquee Brands brought more structured production and distribution processes. The shipping delays and inventory issues that defined the earlier era became significantly less prominent. Additionally, the brand continued producing new drops and collaborations with more operational reliability. As a result, post-2022 ASSC is a more professionally run operation while maintaining the emotional identity that Neek Lurk created.
